Supporting Wild Horse Fire Brigade: Natural Heroes Fighting Wildfires and Restoring Ecosystems

I’m proud to support Wild Horse Fire Brigade (WHFB) because their work with free-roaming wild horses offers a smart, natural solution to some of our biggest challenges—wildfires, ecosystem decline, and the need to protect our wild heritage.
Wild horses are incredible “mowers” of the land. Each horse grazes up to 30 pounds of grass and brush per day, naturally reducing wildfire fuels while helping plants regrow, dispersing seeds, and keeping soils healthy. Their grazing supports biodiversity and creates safer landscapes for people, wildlife, and forests. During the 2018 Klamathon Fire, horses grazing near William’s ranch helped slow the fire and protect areas—real proof that this approach works.
Why WHFB Stands Out Capt. William E. Simpson II and his team have lived among a herd of nearly 200 wild horses for over 12 years. Their deep, hands-on research shows how these horses act as keystone herbivores—building healthier ecosystems while lowering fire risks.
WHFB’s Natural Wildfire Abatement Plan relocates horses into suitable wilderness areas where they can live in natural family bands. With this approach, populations are naturally controlled by the environment and predators, so there is no need for disruptive fertility control. The horses maintain ecological balance while delivering fire mitigation and other benefits.
This isn’t just theory. By rewilding horses currently in long-term holding facilities (and preventing others from entering them), WHFB’s model helps reduce overall wildfire management costs for taxpayers while complementing the critical work of our firefighters and emergency responders. It protects cultural-heritage horses and delivers meaningful environmental benefits.
